Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reiki and how does it work?
Reiki is universal life force energy, also referred to as Qi or Prana energy as in yoga and Qigong. This energy is in everything. The Reiki lineage that I practice was developed in Japan in 1920 by Mikau Usui and brought to the U.S. by one of his students; Mrs. Hawayo Takata in 1937. Reiki is administered by the certified Reiki Practitioner's gentle touch or in some cases holding hands near the client's body. The term Reiki comes from the Japanese words “Rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” which means vital life force energy that flows through all living things.
Reiki has been used effectively for almost 100 years to balance functions of body, mind and spirit. Reiki stimulates the body's own ability to heal itself by optimizing the immune system. It dissolves energy blockages and releases toxins. Reiki can; create deep relaxation, enhance self-awareness; relieve pain, stress, insomnia, depression, PTSD, and side effects of chemotherapy, radiation treatment and medications. Reiki compliments and supports any conventional medical treatments. Reiki is becoming known as a low-risk, beneficial collaborative treatment in the medical community to treat the “whole person”. Reiki is also very beneficial during end of life palliative care for the patient and family.
Also Reiki can amplify:
Progress during life changes
Positive work-life balance
Imagine making a positive life change to reset your energy field and boost your immune system!
What should I expect during my appointment?
We will have a brief intake session during which we’ll talk a little about what brought you in and what to expect. You will lie down on a comfy massage table (which has a heat option when it’s cold outside) fully equipped with comfortable sheets under you and to cover up with if you want. The sheets are washed with eco-friendly soap with no perfumes or dyes for who might have sensitive skin. You will be fully clothed except you will take your shoes off. And of course wonderfully healing and relaxing music will be playing in the background. Also, there will be essential oils (usually lavender and sage) diffusing to add to your sensory experience.
We begin with a brief guided meditation to set the tone for a relaxing and effective session. I will begin placing my hands on and above your body working in a slow progression of strategic hand positions. I encourage you to use this sacred time to go off-line with the world and on-line with just YOU. Your body is full of information and wisdom that often goes unheard in the busyness of daily life. After the session we will talk briefly to debrief and set goals for self-care. For the first session, plan for at least 1½ hours. It can take 2 hours in some cases. Subsequent sessions are usually 1½ hours.
What should I expect during the actual Reiki session?
Light tingling sensations
Energy through your body
Memories or emotions
How quickly can I expect results?
More immediately you will feel very relaxed and grounded. Some clients have what they call a Reiki “high”. Noticeable improvement depends on self-care after the session and your particular issue, and can vary from person to person. This is something we can discuss further when we meet.
How can I tune into my body during the session?
No matter now familiar or unfamiliar you are with the concept of “going within,” you do have the ability to listen to your body. As with anything, it takes practice. Begin by using your breath. As soon as you lie down, tap into your breath. You can deepen your breath by lengthening both your
Inhales and exhales. The guided meditation will help. Most importantly, know that any thing you experience is okay; falling asleep or any of the experiences listed above. Every session is different and unique to you and exactly what you need.
What if emotions come up?
As with feeling physical sensations, it is normal for emotions to come up when having a Reiki session. This means that you are relaxed and open to go with where the healing energy is going. Healing happens when we are ready. The alternative is to hold onto unnecessary stress and emotions, which we want to avoid because over a period of time this can cause illness in the body.
Should I eat before a session?
Try not to eat a big meal an hour or two before your session, but also be sure you’re not going to feel hunger pangs during the session.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably. I would recommend not wearing clothing that is to constricting. Otherwise it’s really up to you.
How often should I come in?
Occasional Reiki is great for relaxation. However, if you are working toward relief from specific issues, more regular treatment is usually necessary, at least in the short term. The therapeutic benefits of Reiki are cumulative and the more frequently you have Reiki the more responsive your body and mind will become as chronic patterns of stress and tension are released.
What should I do between Reiki sessions?
Be consistent with your self-care routine between sessions. If you’re not sure what I mean by self-care, let’s talk about it. The more consistent you are with your self-care routine, the better you’ll feel and the longer lasting the effects of your session will be.
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you become a Reiki Practitioner?
To answer this question, it’s probably helpful that I share with you a few defining moments. Twenty-five years ago I started my career as a Recruiter, which led me to Human Resources in the corporate world; strategizing with Hiring Managers, and interviewing and coaching professionals regarding their career. I thoroughly enjoyed this part of my role; coaching, mentoring, interviewing, strategizing, researching and being part of bringing value to the hiring manager and team as well as the thousands of career professionals with whom I guided and worked.
However, I was in a world that didn’t feed my soul and was not in alignment with my authentic, higher self. While I learned a lot and gained tremendous insight into so much that would benefit me on my new path, at the time I was miserable inside. I knew something wasn’t right and I felt stuck where I was. I felt like I had to figure out what I was going to do next before I could make a change. Eventually I was let go, not because I wasn’t a great performer, in fact my last year I interviewed and hired more people in the largest sector of the company. I'm sure in their own way they could see through my façade that my heart wasn’t fully in it. And they were right. Looking back I fully understand that “Life” changed my situation when I couldn’t do it myself. Today I am grateful.
After a brief "pause", I started a pet care company in the Financial District of NYC where I was living at the time. This started because one of my corporate clients recommended I walk dogs until I found my next “gig.” I hesitated until she asked me a few weeks later if I had followed her advice. The next day I saw a story on the morning show about a pet care company called DogVacay or Rover as it is now called. I realized at that moment that “Life” was trying to nudge me! I created my profile and my business took off from there. I loved my human and furry clients! Some of them became dear friends and were like family. I am grateful for this experience too!
Towards the end of the four years I was in a terrible accident where I was hit by a car while walking my dog. My sweet dog was killed instantly and my foot run over and broken. I also sustained broken ribs but the worst part was the PTSD symptoms and grief of losing my best friend. I had a feeling of electricity in my body that I didn’t understand and nothing would relieve it. One day I received an email from a potential new client who asked if I could walk her new pup. Disappointed, I had to respond that I couldn’t help because I was recovering from a broken foot. Her email reply was that she would get a temporary walker until I was better. She would wait for me. I knew something bigger than me was happening. This gave me a feeling of encouragement and hope.
When I started walking Theo, I got to know Karen. She was a successful Financial Advisor in the city and also a Reiki Master Teacher. Having Reiki treatments with Karen gave me the relief I so needed from that electrical feeling I had and the other PTSD symptoms. Reiki also took me to the place I was so desperately looking for when I was in my corporate career. I felt relief and a connection with my true self I had never had before. Overall I had such a profound experience I knew that I wanted to master Reiki and provide this experience for others, primarily women. Karen Kennedy was my teacher. Raven Keyes was her teacher. I found out how important it is to have a community around me not only for my recovery but also for the transition I would have in my new career as a Reiki Master Practitioner and my desire to create a community in my practice.
Reiki has played a huge part in my life integrating to a path I’m much more excited about traveling.
What type of personality do you work best with, who are your clients exactly and what is expected of me should we work together?
Reiki Groove’s Reiki sessions, workshops, retreats and Groove Programs (which is in the works) are created for those who are absolutely excited, seriously open about and ready to commit to allow healing effects of Reiki to work, and also those who are ready to develop positive self-care routines and changes in their lives.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept cash and debit or major credit cards with Square.
What if I’m running late?
Because I work on an appointment basis, my schedule can be very tight. Being on time also allows me to provide the full session length, and you will walk into the session feeling calm rather than frantic. Worst case scenario, please let me know if you’re running late as soon as you can and we can work together to resolve scheduling conflicts.
What is your cancellation policy?
Because of the appointment-based nature of my business, please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. If you are not able to do so, a $50 fee will be assessed in addition to the balance of your next appointment.
If you have other questions, I encourage you to contact me.
